Transformational thinking occurs by efforts at home and in the workplace.  Think of how many hours you spend at your job.  You spend more hours on the job than at home.   I was rummaging around in my vast archives to find something to write about today and came across an article that was written in the January 1984 issue of Management Review.  It’s written by Arthur C. Beck and Ellis D. Hillmar.  This information is timeless and still appropriate for today’s manager, or any employee.  If you think about it, aren’t you your own manager?  You make a difference…empower yourself and by osmosis you will empower others.  Many of my readers work in an environment less than desirable, but now is not the time to throw up your hands and quit – it’s the time for self-examination and turning lemons into a Lemon Drop Martini to get you through these rough economic times.

The article is called What Managers Can do to Turn Around Negative Attitudes in an Organization.

Thus I quote and paraphrase:

Negative Energy

Organizations experiencing negative energy frequently are faced with poor employee performance.  Great energy is expended on attacking individuals, avoidance, anger and punitive action at the expense of promoting exceptional positive performance.

Statements such as “Things will never change.” Or “You just can’t win,” indicate the level of despair associated with negative energy.  While the excitement of anger and hostility may be intense, it is counterproductive and fosters poor problem-solving efforts.  When people’s positive energies are absorbed or neutralized by these negatives, they are unable to engage in problem solving effectively.  Low trust levels prevail, and there is little risk taking.  Individuals do the minimum because it is safe and in keeping with the energy available to do the job.

Transforming Negative to Positive

Take 30 seconds to think about a negative experience that you have had where you felt very bad.  Re-experience those feelings.

Take another 30 seconds to reflect on a very pleasant experience that you have had.  Re-experience those feelings.

What did you find out?  You may have demonstrated that you can create your own feelings, both pleasant and unpleasant.  Know that you can refocus and change your unpleasant or negative feelings to positive feelings in less than a minute anytime you wish.  The attitudinal choice is yours. (Queen’s emphasis here.)

Managerial Transformation Techniques

Model positive behavior.  Expect a lot from people, support them, hold them accountable, confront them, and above all be clear and honest with them without damaging their self-esteem.  The positive orientation needs to permeate the organization and be articulate in its goals and concerns.

Acknowledge Negativity.  If negative energy is present, do not deny it, ignore it, or put people down with statements like, “you shouldn’t feel that way”, or “that’s a dumb way to look at things.”  Accept that condition as reality, look for the cause and develop strategies for transforming the negative energy into positive, i.e., “I understand how you feel.  What would you like to do about this problem?”  Get the negatives out into the open and then start listing the positives.

Give positive recognition often.  Providing positive recognition is probably the most significant strategy to establish and maintain positive energy.

Refrain from collusion on negativity.  Getting caught up in the “bitching” or “ain’t it awful!” conversations is easy to do. When faced with such conversations, refrain from collusion.  Strategies for dealing with negative conversations could be asking what can be done to improve the situation or ask what the positives are in the situation being discussed.

Refrain from using putdowns.  Negative words, and killer phrases, such as “we tried that years ago” and “we don’t do it that way here” need to be eliminated.

Be specific and clear:

  • Talk directly to an individual in a specific way instead of broadcasting to an undefined group
  • Say what you mean, speak in clear simple sentences
  • Avoid telling others what they should or should not do
  • Avoid exaggerating words such as everybody, nobody, always and never

The job of transforming an organization’s energy from negative to positive rests with both the individual manager and the organization.  While the transformation may take time, it will be quite beneficial.  Positive energy will enable people to rise to new levels of accomplishment and self-esteem.

Smudging is a seasonal occurrence in my home.  The ceremony of smudging is found in all cultures.  Living in New England I acknowledge and honour those First Americans for this knowledge.

Smudging is the practice of using Sacred smoke to cleanse the energy of a person or place.

There has been much discussion as to what to burn to create the cleansing smoke.  Is it cedar, white sage, incense or sweet grass?  When I was younger I used a white sage stick.  As I learned more about this custom I was taught by a First American mentor to not use white sage as it is considered Sacred Medicine and not burnt.  So, it’s your choice: sage, cedar or sweet grass.  You can purchase smudge sticks or make them.

Reasons to smudge:

To clear negative thoughts.

To clear that heavy, sad feeling in a home.

To clear energies that may be lurking after an argument.

To clear energies when you move into a new home/apartment.

To clear energies after a long sickness.

To elevate your energy and let the Light into your heart.

To remove feelings of remorse, jealousy or mourning.

To participate in a Sacred Rite to honour indigenous people and ancestors who came before us.

How to Smudge Your Home:

1. Unwrap the skinniest top and fan out the top of the braid then ignite. If using a cedar wand, ignite the shortest end.

2. I use a very large feather to fan the flames and ensure the smudge stick is burning. Once the flames subside there will be an abundant amount of smoke.

3. Start at the east direction of your home. (Don’t have a compass? Wherever the sun comes up is east!)

4. Let the smoke fill the most easterly corner of your home. Walk slowly in a clock-wise direction and smudge the windows, and the door openings. Proceed to the next room until all your rooms have been smudged. You should end up at the place you began.

If you have a top and bottom level to your home do those floors as well.

Hold a large non-flammable plate or abalone shell to catch any hot ashes as you move around your rooms will eliminate burn holes in your floor.

Warning:  you are dealing with open flames so use caution.  Watch out for curtains, and smoke-alarms.  You should be moving in a slow continuous motion so the smoke does not settle and hang in an area for too long.

How To Smudge An Aura:

Follow # 1 & 2 above.

3.  Hold the smudge stick away from the body, approximately 12″ and begin at the crown of the head.  Let the smoke travel down the front of the body and have the person lift one foot at a time to smudge under each foot.  Bring the smudge stick to the back of the body and travel the smoke up to the crown of the head.  Use your hand or a large feather to ensure the smoke has touched the body.  The person who is being smudged can use their hands to bring the smoke to their head area, heart and arms as well.

4.  To smudge your own energy simply light the stick or braid and set the smoking stick in an abalone shell or bowl.  Bring the bowl close to your heart.  Using your hands or a large feather fan, let the smoke cover the top of your head, shoulders, and all parts of your body that you can reach.

You are Light.

When born you were filled with Universal Light and upon the first verbal sounds that uttered from your baby lips the Light was within you.  The connection of this Light can be seen through the eyes or sensed in the auric field. It defines the “awake” people from the walking soul-wounded.

When my daughter was born it took two weeks for this Light to emanate from her eyes.  I walked into the nursery and there it was-a brilliant yellow white light shining from her eyes.  Her personality was jump started; rebooted.  She was connected to the Light.  When my son was born the Light was instantaneous like a laser beam.  I always wondered why the difference between my two children?  Was my daughter’s higher consciousness weighing the values to stay or go from this earth plane?  Was she thinking, “Oh No! Not this blue planet AGAIN!”  This profound discovery of what I had experienced left me in awe for years.

There are those who are awake and those who are not.  We see the non-awake people in the shopping centers, work, in our own circle of family and friends.  We see it in the faces of alcoholics, drug addicts, abused children and women who have been the victims of domestic violence.  Fractured.  Has the Light  been stolen by someone else, or it is hiding waiting to be reactivated as it was at their moment of birth?

This is one reason why I created this site.  I wanted to identify and help people find their Light again.  I wanted them to know that it’s possible to Reclaim Your Light.

Are you feeling there is a void in your life? As if your flame has been extinguished?  As if you are slogging to pull yourself through each day?

First get yourself a good physical check up with a Doctor you can trust.  Follow the advice and give it due course.
